How web typography evolved over the period of time!

Typography is among the most critical elements which are put together for designing a website. In the words of world famous designers, around 95% of web design is typography, which was not ever as much personalized as today. It took a long time to reach the present stage due to some technical limitations.

Take a look at how this technology evolved and developed over the period of time. It was after 20th century when typography started at a small level. For a long time, there were compatibility issues with typography and professional logo designing and there were not big advancement in it initially. Display technology and screen resolutions came into picture during 20th century, but there were only as little as five basic types of fonts.

Although a lot of verities of fonts had been developed by then, but they were not supported by computers. Because of limited choice among web designers to create an interesting content, they started to use images and flash. Although professionals were waiting to try out new and more distinctive styles, the technical limitations restricted them from actual implementation.

Before 20th century came to an end, web typography was revolutionized by Microsoft when it introduced EOT (embedded open file type) format. The format allowed users to see the text in the same style and font as used by designers. The format gave professionals a freedom to use any style and font type which were supported by computers.

However EOT technology also had certain limitations and issues such as that related to licensing. The creators of font types were not willing to issue license for its usage on the web, due to the fear of online thefts, without which those styles could not be compatible with the browsers.

It was by the year 2008, that typography evolved at a fast pace when Apple launched Safari 3.1 which allowed browsers to download TTF and OTF files which was capable of supporting multiple text styles without fear of any thefts. To keep up with the competition, Google Chrome, Opera and Mozilla Firefox adopted new font files which helped New York based web designers and those across the world convert normal looking styles into EOT type.

To avoid chances of theft, a major advancement took place in 2009. The type foundries issued protection to the files, which restricted anyone to install them before proper license. Ever since, there has been an explosion in terms of font varieties.
